Alien: The Cold Forge By Alex White Book Review
Great review and I'm so glad you loved it! All the Fiends of Hell is, for me, also the scariest book I've ever read!
@@kayleighmarieedwards8965 SOOOOOOOOOOOO scary!
Nice
I don't think I've ever been nervous about reading a book.
It was a unique situation. I don't want to tell someone I know that their book sucks. 🤐
I understand that but I've never been unfortunate enough to be in that situation.
I own many Preston and Child books. I even have their books that they've written separately. But unfortunately I haven't read a single one yet. I have the same problem that you do. There are just too many books to read.
I have read some of their solo books. IMO, good, but not as good as they are together.
I’m up to date with the Pendergast Series awaiting book #22 “Angel of Vengeance “which is coming soon. I enjoyed all of them generally smearing them all with 5 stars. The Nora Kelly series were usually 3 stars. I haven’t started the Gideon Crew or the Wyman Ford series yet. Also some of the early Stand Alone novels remain unread. Aloysius Pendergast remains one of my favorite characters. The heck with money when we shuffle off this mortal coil; we need to find a way to bring all of our unread piles of books.
Holy cow! 22?! I've barely scratched the surface. I really need to dig back into their books. But, as always, there is SO MUCH to read.
I'm so glad that Valancourt has republished many out of print books. The first Valancourt book that I read was Burnt Offerings by Robert Marasco. I need to read more of their republished books.
I have a non-Valancourt copy of Burnt Offerings, but haven't read it. I would like to pick up more of their books that aren't part of the Paperbacks From Hell. I have maybe half a dozen, or so, right now.
I loved this book! I read this a couple months ago. I love Nevill, he's one of my favorite authors. House of small shadows was my first and will always be my favorite, it actually gave me nightmares. Night Gallery was so good! The one with the spider that kept coming out of the sink getting bigger each time! That has stuck with me for many years. I still hate spiders! Lol
I haven't read House of Small Shadows, yet. Night Gallery was SO good!
Summer 1960 NYC . My two sisters and I went to a summer matinee movie for kids. We could walk to the theater. It was some kind of religious movie which was approved by the local parochial school we attended. We knew another movie was next so we slid down in our seats while the Movie Matrons cleared out the kids. ( Movie Matrons were a real thing). They didn’t notice us. The next movie started; it was “Village of the Dammed”. I actually don’t know how long we sat there until we started screaming. We must have been extremely loud. They stopped the movie, turned on the lights and hustled us to the lobby. The theater called our parents, and our Dad came to get us. To this day, I still remember the eyes and light hair on the kids. I still avoid reading “The Midwich Cuckoos” by John Wyndham.
That is a fantastic story. I haven't been avoiding The Midwich Cuckoos, but I haven't read it yet. Have you ever finished watching Village of the Damned?
No, never did, probably never will.
Wait! Let me get my sunglasses. That’s a bright shirt and a scary book cover! So far I’ve only read “ No One Gets out Alive” and the “Reddening”by Adam Nevill. “ Most terrifying book that you ever read” is a scary admission. I have a copy of “All that Fiends of Hell”. I’ll move it up the queue after a finish some Ronald Malfi books.
I haven't read either of those Nevill books...yet. I love Malfi's stuff. I still have a few that I haven't read...yet.
As a child I was afraid of Tales From The Darkside. The intro was enough to frighten me. Poltergeist also scared me. But as an adult I don't think much has frightened me. Existential horror comes the closest. Some stories by Laird Barron and Thomas Ligotti. I really need to start reading Adam Nevill's work very soon.
Existential dread is very scary. I assume it's because of the psychological nature of it.
You assume correctly.
I haven't read the novel or the manga. I haven't seenthe movie either. I do want to read the novel and manga though.
I can highly recommend two out of three.
I thiiiink I saw the movie of TDC but I can’t remember it very well. I have yet to pick up a Dan Brown book
CC Adams recommended Thor to me but I haven’t read it yet. I recently read Such Sharp Teeth by Rachel Harrison and I LOVED it!
I haven't read Such Sharp Teeth, yet, but I'm looking forward to it.
I’ve never heard of Colchak (? Spelling?!) - I’m turned off by detective stories for some reason. As a seasoned detective story enjoyer, where would you recommend I start?
Kolchak. 😁 The Sonja Blue books by Nancy A. Collins, if you want vampires. The Nightside series by Simon R. Green, for something creepy (as I remember it). If you are willing to try some crime fiction, with no supernatural element, it doesn't come any better than the Hap & Leonard series by Joe R. Lansdale. I love the Cal McDonald stories by Steve Niles. The comics and the prose stuff.
I haven’t read Battle Royale but I’ve been meaning to for years! I really liked the movie. I remember seeing it as a teenager and being totally blown away by the idea
I like that they made plenty of changes from the book, but still managed to make a great movie.
I haven't seen either of the movies or read any books or comics. But I have seen the original TV show and I like it. I'm very interested in buying the reprints of the first two books.
Holy cow. I was seven, when I started watching that show. That may explain a few things.
I’ve been looking for good gothic horror books that wasn’t too hyped up. This sounds like something I’d be interested in reading. I ordered it and just got it in the mail yesterday. I can’t wait to read this one. 😊
I hope you dig it.
My favorite werewolf book is The Wolf's Hour by Robert McCammon. My favorite werewolf movie is An American Werewolf in London. I love werewolves. I remember when I was a child that there was a TV series called Werewolf. I used to love that show.
I really enjoyed The Wolf's Hour, and I really need to read The Hunter in the Woods. I also need to reread Animal by Skipp & Spector. I'm very excited about a new Werewolf By Night comic series that comes out in a couple of months.
I thought it was so cool that he included characters from his earlier novels!
Unfortunately, I haven't read enough of his stuff to realize that. It is cool, though. I like that kind of thing.
@ErikSmith57 yes,if I recall elizabeth conger fromm suffer the children makes an appearance.i also think it's funny that he always has a character named Jeff in almost every novel.
@@pastel86z A long time ago, when I had writing aspirations, I had planned to have the first victim in every story have the same name.
I thought “Angels and Demons” was better. Both were good at the time but I doubt I would ever reread them. I think that that is true for many books: great to read at that moment but they lose their charm over time. The opposite is also true: some books retain their charm over decades finally getting named a Classic. As always , there are too many other excellent books screaming to be read.
I definitely prefer Angels and Demons. SO MANY books to read!
I own The DaVinci Code but I haven't read it. I haven't seen the movie either. I own the other books in the series as well and I haven't read any of them.
I haven't read any Dan Brown since The DaVinci Code.
I've read the first three books and The Magpie Coffin is the first one. I liked the three I read. In fact, I bought and read The Damned Place and The Damned Ones both by Chris Miller. Those two books take place before Dust. I need to read more of the Splatter Westerns. I have a lot more but I just haven't gotten around to reading any of the others yet. I'm reading them in order. The last one that I bought was The Devoured and The Dead by Kristopher Rufty.
The last one I bought was Here Comes The Sun by Justin M. Woodward. I think that the only one I read out of order was Red Station, because it is by Kenzie Jennings.
I wish they were still numbered.
Me, too.
I'm not sure if adding horror to a franchise that I'm completely uninterested in would make me interested. For me romance is the only genre that I'm completely uninterested in.
Yeah. I'm not a fan of romance, either. I think that I would be more likely to think " That was a horror novel, with some romance elements." than "That was a romance, with some horror elements. "
I read Savage Species and Children of the Dark. Been waiting for this one for years. Will is an awesome character and the Children/ Night Flier is awesome great world to explore.
I wouldn't complain if Mr. Janz decided to write many more books in this world.
I just got done reading “Killer” yesterday 😃 it’s really good, I enjoyed it a lot. I hope to see what your thoughts on it will be when it’s next on your list. Next i will also be reading the novelization of “Orca”, it being one of my favorite movies. 😊
It looks like Killer is way down on the list, so it will be awhile. I read Orca, and enjoyed it, but I haven't seen the movie. (I have to fix that.)
What I really look for in novelizations such as these that are adaptations of another media (tv, video games etc.) are: well written prose that helps me easily visualize what's going on, a good story, consistency of characters and themes such that it still feels like a story from the same franchise.
❤❤💖💖❤❤💖💖
Hey, Erik, this is Vince Courtney. Just stumbled upon this. Love to see your interest in the old horror stuff. Next time you talk to Lynne, tell her I said hey.You mentioned wanting to read the revised version of Goblins, What's Wrong with the Baby? It's no longer out under that title. I'm going back to the original title Goblins since any reviews don't carry over to the new title. Anyway, I've been rereleasing all my 90's horror books in revised versions with Crossroad Press, eBook and paperback. Die Laughing, Deadly Diet, The Room are already out with Vampire Beat and Goblins coming soon. David Dodd did some cool covers with a 90's vibe. It was a blast getting the chance to rewrite the past and prune the deadwood from my stories. Anyway, thanks for the review. Maybe my revisions can get Goblins to a 4.5. 😊
@@VinceCourtney Hey! Great to hear from you. I will definitely be picking up your other titles, when I can. I definitely love older horror. Takes me back to my younger days. Thanks for watching and commenting!
I loved Dogma! I had just started reading the Preacher comics when I saw this in the theater with some friends.
Dogma and Preacher. That's a hell of a combination. I really need to reread Preacher.
Gabriel Allon appears in his 24th book. I have the first 19 in the series but have not been motivated to start them. You posed an interesting idea: will the theme and characters of the books resonate in today’s political quagmire. You certainly find and read some very interesting books!
Back in the day there was a lot of going to the library, and just grabbing stuff that caught my eye.
I haven't read anything by Jonathan Janz. I own four of his books but i have so many books to read. I just haven't gotten around to reading his work yet.
I have quite a few that I haven't read yet.
I'm not familiar with him.
I first noticed him in The League, which is one of my favorite shows. (Not sure if it should be called a "sitcom.")
I don't think he was an assassin but I think it's possible that the CIA has assassins. I don't remember ever watching any of his shows. I've heard of them but I haven't seen them.
I haven't read any of this genre of fiction but this series sounds like something I would enjoy.
It's wild. I've been reading them since the 80s.
Being the book’s 1st person narrator is not a guarantee of smooth and prosperous life.
Sometimes, it doesn't even guarantee survival.
I just finished this book. It was pretty darn good. I didn't like Vesper either and I think you're right: that's the point. And the parallel for those who experience religious trauma is so well-written. Great book.
Glad you liked it. I'm very much looking forward to her next one.
Thanks for the review Erik, glad you enjoyed the book.
Thank YOU! Killer animals is my favorite horror sub-genre, so I'm happy to have another good book to add to the collection.
The last chapter was INSANE. Possibly the most chaotic ending to a book I've ever read.
It is WILD!
Would anyone be willing to give me a little spoiler rundown of the twists? I don't care about spoilers and I like to know more about what im getting into.
@@thumbhead3370 SPOILERS... ... ... ... Basically, they are hunting people. There is a little twist at the end, that I don't want to give away, but it does recontextualize the story, a bit.
@@ErikSmith57 what do you mean? It seems pretty clear from the synopsis that they're hunting people. How is that a twist?
Hmmmm. Well, they have a plan, that goes awry. Maybe that's what I was talking about? It's been awhile. If I just said "twists and turns," then I don't mean like a The Sixth Sense type of twist. (I'm at work, and cant watch the vide,to see what I actually said.)
@@thumbhead3370 Okay. I just watched the video. "Twists and turns" just means something like I didn't expect character A to do what they did, and I didn't expect what happened to character B. That kind of thing. No big TWIST, like it's all a dream, or the trees made them do it.
@@ErikSmith57 ah I understand Well, in any case I did just end up buying the novella on Kindle anyway. I think I know what moments you're talking about 😂 Read the whole thing in the hours since my comment
I've never experienced this and the only one of these movies I've seen is The Haunting of Hill House. I've heard if the other movies and I've heard of the gimmicks.
Did I say The Haunting of Hill House? If so, I meant The House On Haunted Hill. I always mix up those titles.
I'm probably the one who mixed up the titles. In fact, I did mix up the titles. I meant The House on Haunted Hill.
The titles are so similar, it's almost annoying. 🤨
I don't believe any of those things can make you a Satanist but i agree that it's interesting. I was a kid during the Satanic Panic days. I remember that He-Man and Rainbow Brite were both considered Satanic. I remember the Dungeon and Dragons scare. Talk shows had specials about this and somewhere on RUclips there is a channel that uploads all of those old Satanic Panic videos. There are books that I want to buy that talks about this. When I was a teenager I started listening to Marilyn Manson when Antichrist Superstar was first released. I remember the panic over that band. I also have Utopia by Lincoln Child but of course i haven't read it yet. I'm actually reading a book that you've mentioned on these reading remembrances. The Light At The End by John Skipp and Craig Spector.
The Light At The End was my favorite, for a long time. I'm very interested in your thoughts. I recieved a copy of Playing With Fire the other day. I may reread it soon.
I just got this on Audible after reading some good reviews and it's great so far. Btw, you are pronouncing her name right 👍🏼 Bronson Pinchot is narrating it quite well. I'm about an hour in and I'd describe it as like a Game of Thrones meets Alien. Thanks for the review.
Thanks for watching and commenting! I'm always happy to her that people are enjoying this book.
Book 7 out of 10. Series horrid.
I haven't watched the series, yet. Now, I may just avoid it. Thanks for the warning.
I have had no experience with this but I’d go to a spook show without hesitation.
It sounds like so much fun!
I read and enjoyed “Monkeewrench” by P J Tracy. Checked in with Goodreads and was surprised to see the series contains 10 books. More to read! UTOPIA has been sitting on my shelf since 2015. Needs to be dusted off and read.
Holy cow! I didn't know that there were 10 of them! Looks like I have to see if they have any at HPB.
I do enjoy that type of story telling but I can't think of an example right now.
I can't think of any others, off the top of my head.
I've heard that this book was written well. I can't wait to read these books.
SO well written!
I love The Simpsons! Especially from Season Three and onward. I also love The Treehouse of Horror. I would like to know the twist in The Plantation.
SPOILERS! ... ... ... There is a group of African Americans who are kidnapping the descendents of slave owners, and enslaving them, on the plantation.
I've read a couple of the comics and I watched the first movie. I'm very interested in reading more Dr. Strange comics though.
Doctor Strange was the first horror adjacent superhero comic that I read, and I loved it. Still reading it today.
Thanks for posting this talk. The are not so many Interviews around on RUclips with Greg. Im Happy that i found this. Greetings from Germany.
You are very welcome! Greetings from Ohio.
